Position Summary

The practice of interventional radiology is performed by health care professionals responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation to humans for diagnostic, therapeutic or research purposes. An interventional radiologic technologist performs radiographic and other procedures at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. Interventional technology integrates scientific knowledge, technical competence and patient interaction skills to provide safe and accurate procedures with compassion. A cardiovascular interventional technologist recognizes patient conditions essential for the successful completion of the procedure. The interventional radiologic technologist must demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology and medical terminology. He or she must maintain a high degree of accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure technique. Interventional radiologic technologists must possess, use and maintain knowledge about radiation protection and safety. Interventional radiologic technologists independently perform or assist the licensed independent practitioner in the completion of interventional technology procedures. Interventional radiologic technologists prepare, administer and document activities related to medications in accordance with state and federal regulations or lawful institutional policy. The interventional radiologic technologist is the primary imaging liaison between patients, licensed independent practitioners and other members of the support team. Interventional radiologic technologists must remain sensitive to the needs of the patient through good communication, patient assessment, patient monitoring, and patient care skills. As members of the health care team, interventional radiologic technologists participate in quality improvement processes and continually assess their professional performance. Interventional radiologic technologists think critically and use independent, professional and ethical judgments in all aspects of their work. They engage in continuing education, to include their area of practice, to enhance patient care, radiation safety, public education, knowledge, and technical competence.

Position Responsibilities

Standard Work Duties: Intervent Radiographer

  • Under the supervision of the interventional Radiologist, Vascular Surgeon or other licensed independent practitioner, the interventional radiologic technologist performs diagnostic/interventional procedures as prescribed or directed
  • The Interventional Radiologic Technologist determines radiographic technique exposure factors, effectively pans the table during exposures, assists the licensed independent practitioner's with fluoroscopic and specialized interventional radiography procedures and performs noninterpretive fluoroscopic procedures.
  • Maintains intra-arterial access as prescribed
  • Participates in physiologic monitoring of patients
  • Performs manual and mechanical hemostasis, including the use of vascular closure devices
  • Places, maintains and removes peripherally inserted central catheters
  • Assists licensed independent practitioners in selecting appropriate catheters, wires, equipment, and other devices necessary for the procedure
  • Operates and maintains a variety of equipment such as contrast injectors, ultrasound systems, lasers, etc. and reports any malfunctions promptly to the appropriate parties to ensure timely repairs
  • Participates in radiation protection, patient and personnel safety, risk management, and quality management activities
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Other information:

Licenses Essential: Current General Radiographer license from the Florida Department of Health, Division of Medical Quality Assurance. Certifications Essential: American Registry of Radiologic Technology - Radiologic Technology ARRT - (R) and the advanced credential of Vascular Interventional (VI) within 36 months of hire date

BLS for Healthcare providers that is AHA approved and ACLS within 12 months of hire date

Certifications Preferred: American Registry of Radiologic Technology - Vascular Interventional (VI)

Experience Essential: 12 months experience as a Radiologic Technologist

Experience Preferred: 24 months experience as an Interventional Radiologic Technologic Technologist
