Police Officer I Department: University Police - 430500
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalency. Applicants must be eligible for certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
License/Certification Required Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission
or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications Current certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Protect lives and property
- Initiate opportunities for positive engagement with students, faculty, staff, and visitors
- Apprehend and arrest offenders
- Traffic control and enforcement
- Conduct preliminary investigations
- Write reports and prepare criminal case paperwork
- Establish, preserve, and protect crime scenes
- Collect and preserve evidence
- Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects
- Utilize the principles of procedural justice
- Investigate vehicle crashes and prepare reports
- Conduct lawful searches of people and property
- Respond to calls for service related to medical issues
- Engage in self-initiated vehicle, foot, motorcycle, and bicycle patrol activities
- Establish effective working relationships and rapport with people from various racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds
- Engage with others in a fair, respectful, and courteous manner, regardless of cultural differences.
- Engage effectively with persons in various emotional and mental states
- Accurately assess situations and determine an appropriate course of action
- Confront a variety of problems and situations and determine appropriate solutions
- Display the capacity for compassion and empathy
Work Schedule/Hours: 12-hour shifts, night or day. Normally 4 days on and 4 days off rotation. Shifts are bid by seniority every year. Weekend and holiday work may be required. Shifts and hours may vary depending on the needs of the organization.
Suggested Salary Range: $58,412.00 -- $77,816.00 (Depending on education level and years of experience)
