Job Description and Duties

The Animal Health Branch (AHB) functions as California’s organized, professional veterinary medical unit to protect public health, animal agriculture, and the economy from catastrophic animal diseases and other related health and agricultural problems. AHB addresses livestock diseases and issues that require statewide coordinated resources; implements programs that protect public health and animal agriculture; and ensures the availability, affordability, and wholesomeness of food.

The Animal Health Branch is advertising to fill a Research Scientist II within the Sacramento Headquarters Office.

Research and Development

  • Research scientific literature on livestock diseases and livestock health to serve as a resource for issues related to program and functions

  • Provide scientific research studies and support for epidemiological investigations and vaccination programs when requested by AHB Livestock Veterinary Specialists

  • Develop, evaluate and refine a comprehensive surveillance plan for Avian Influenza and other livestock diseases based on scientific research and collaboration with AHB Poultry Livestock Specialists

Scientific Consultant for Livestock Epidemiology

  • Serve as liaison with the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory (CAHFS) system for livestock disease reporting and monitor the incident of endemic livestock diseases.

  • Interpret scientific findings on topics such as zoonotic diseases and disease surveillance, and present to higher-level scientists

  • Perform work as assigned relating to disease control and eradication, which involves visiting farms, residences, feed stores, saleyards, swap meets, commercial facilities, quarantine stations and other premises for the purpose of testing and inspecting livestock for evidence of disease

  • Act independently, and at times assist veterinarians and animal health professionals in the field, to obtain diagnostic specimens

Working Conditions

The duties of this position are mostly conducted indoors; however, the incumbent may occasionally be required to work outside, under difficult conditions, and in non-standard office environments.

Travel (including nights, weekends, and holidays) for extended periods may be required for meetings and events as well as during an emergency response. Travel on short notice may be required upon activation for emergency response. During emergency response periods, duties may require working long shifts at hours other than the normal work hours.

The incumbent must follow CDFA, Division, and Branch employee health and safety policies.

Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbent’s ongoing regular schedule in accordance with CDFAs Telework Policy.
