Job Description

TARGAN is seeking a skilled research veterinarian with expertise in the poultry and swine industries. This role is pivotal in guiding veterinary and animal welfare practices, collaboration on vaccine and biological delivery and ensuring regulatory compliance within agricultural research studies. You’ll work at the intersection of animal science and engineering to help bring next-generation solutions to global food production and animal health.

Job Duties:

  • Responsible for the conduct of field trials in support of TARGAN’s research endeavors. Co-lead the planning, execution and analysis of field trials.
  • Conduct posting sessions and provide veterinary services for research studies and trials.
  • Communicate research findings with both internal and external stakeholders including presenting at livestock or veterinary conferences.
  • Write, implement and enforce research protocols.
  • Provide input and expertise on product strategy from a veterinary perspective. Identify vaccines and other biologics that could or should be delivered through TARGAN’s proprietary technology.
  • Provide input on biosecurity and animal welfare policies.
  • Support and practice the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) in all animal research activities.
  • Conduct in vivo laboratory experiments and assist in the development of biological assays.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering teams on the design of novel devices.
  • Ensure compliance to regulatory standards for animal care and abide by USDA regulations for vaccine/biologic delivery.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA-accredited institution.
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States.
  • 5-10 years of experience working with livestock species in a laboratory, experimental or field setting.
  • Experience in leading scientific research projects.
  • Experience with LIMS, Microsoft Excel and Power Bi preferred.
  • Experience with USDA CVB safety and efficacy studies regulatory submissions.
  • Knowledge of poultry (broilers, layers, breeders & turkeys) & swine diseases and suitable prevention & treatment programs.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and cross-functional teams and processes.
  • Excellent organization, time management and conflict resolution skills.
  • Skills in preparing Trial and Team budgets
  • Skills in leading/managing through influence
  • Highly proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-directed & goal-oriented with a strong desire to achieve and exceed expectations.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed inside a flex space building consisting of offices, open desk space, laboratory, and a manufacturing floor or in the field at hatcheries & farms. Level of noise is usually quiet in the office environment and temperature controlled. Noise levels are elevated in the warehouse space where temperatures can vary depending on the outside elements and weather. Travel will be required, including trips to visit suppliers, attend conferences, meetings (customer, investor, and business) and customer sites (hatcheries, farms, processing plants and other animal related facilities).
